AI Xchange: Supporting lecturers’ critical AI use in teaching, learning and assessment

What are South African universities doing to support lecturers in using AI thoughtfully, critically, and ethically for teaching, learning and assessment? How are institutions developing critical AI literacies, and what opportunities and challenges are emerging?

Academic developers, learning designers and educational technologists are invited to share approaches, resources, and lessons from supporting lecturers in the rapidly changing AI landscape.

To kick off the discussion, Dr Anthea Jacobs (University of the Western Cape), Assoc. Prof. Simone Titus-Dawson (Stellenbosch University), and Dr Nicola Pallitt (Rhodes University) will share what is happening in their spaces.

The discussion is guided by the following questions:

  • What do lecturers share as their needs when it comes to AI for teaching, learning and assessment?
  • What do you think lecturers need most right now?
  • What counts as “critical AI literacy” in your context?
  • What forms of professional development or other support opportunities does your university make available to support lecturers (guidelines, workshops, short courses, webinars, panel discussions, resources)?
  • What informs how you design these offerings? (concepts, frameworks, context, student feedback, etc.)
  • What feedback have you received from lecturers about the impact of these opportunities?
  • What challenges do you experience when supporting lecturers with AI?

Participants are invited to share their responses in advance as part of the dialogue registration for group reflection. We will also invite further reflections and questions as part of the discussion.

Please sign up here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to join the digital dialogue.

This digital dialogue is hosted in partnership between HELTASA’s Professional Learning and Digital Learning and Teaching project teams. Presenters will kick off the dialogue, followed by a facilitated activity in which participants can share their perspectives, highlights, concerns, and further questions.

This event is open to all participants. We envision this dialogue as part of a series, and invite members of other networks to host follow-up Xchange dialogues with similar or different focus areas (eg. supporting students, supporting postgraduate students and supervisors, etc) to share with the HELTASA community.
