The First Year Experience in Higher Education: A Good Practices Guide

FUNDANI, CPUT and SANRC are proud to announce the publication of ‘The First Year Experience in Higher Education: A Good Practices Guide’, a guide to practices that are working in selected FYE programmes in South African Higher Education Institutions.

The Guide was developed with support from the DHET NCTDG Project: The improvement of teaching and learning in South African universities through researching and evaluating TDG projects in the First Year Experience (FYE) initiatives, Tutorials, Mentoring and Writing Retreats.

  • Disseminate their experiences of effective FYE practices

  • Provide support to academics teaching undergraduate courses in reflecting and writing about their practices
  • Strengthen their writing for publication capacity

Links with HELTASA

HELTASA has established active Special Interest Groups (SIGs) which organise national and regional meetings and symposia, and hold annual general meetings at the HELTASA conference. HELTASA’s SIGS provide a vehicle through which the TDG research themes will be developed.

The SIGs have in the past developed both practice and academically-orientated materials for the improvement of teaching and learning: for example, the Foundation SIG produced two volumes of academic and practice articles, Beyond the university gates: Provision of ECP in SA and Case studies of epistemological access in foundation/extended curriculum programme studies in South Africa.
