We invite applications for the permanent position of Deputy Director in the Academic Staff and Professional Development (ASPD) Unit in CHED for appointment as soon as possible.
The ASPD Unit in the Dean’s Office, is recruiting a deputy director to provide strategic, leadership and programmatic oversight, management, and co-ordination of CHED academic and professional staff development (ASPD) offerings both within the faculty, across faculties in the wider university, as well as in the region and the Higher Education sector nationally.
Reporting to the Dean of CHED, the Deputy Director will participate in setting the mission, vision, and implementation of staff development activities offered by CHED, across a wide range of activity types and modes of delivery. The position requires oversight on university-wide staff development activity , in particular, the NAPP, NGAP, ESAPP, HODEP and TSCOT programmes (https://ched.uct.ac.za/ched-units-deans-office/academic-staff-and-professional-development-aspd). The Deputy Director will work in conjunction with other departments in CHED, specificallythe Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT), the Academic Development Programme (ADP) and the Centre for Educational Assessments (CEA). The Deputy Director needs to be responsive to the needs of staff development identified and generated across the wider institution in line with UCT’s Vision 2030; to monitor and evaluate the quality and impact of programmes on an ongoing basis; to report on the efficacy of programmes; to have oversight of the financial aspects of the ASPD as well as staff development related UCDG projects . Additionally, the Deputy Director will contribute to strategy and co-ordination of ASPD offerings that have a regional and national focus.
- At least ten years’ experience in teaching, assessment, and curriculum development in higher education.
- Good progress on a PhD; or a master’s degree in relevant field of study.
- Experience of working in academic or professional staff development programmes.
- Project leadership and management experience, including experience of managing teaching teams
- Experience in postgraduate teaching and curriculum design with attention to decolonization and transformation
- Experience with multimodal and blended pedagogy, and an understanding of digitally enabled education.
- A broad knowledge and understanding of finance and budgeting, with analytical and interpretive abilities, and honesty and integrity in handling and managing finances
- Ability to source external funding, write funding proposals and complete narrative reports.
- Understanding of the Higher Education context and response to Higher Education challenges.
- Engagement in research and related activities.
- Understanding of social responsiveness in higher education
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), sound interpersonal and presentation skills.
- Computer literacy in the use of MS Office and cloud computing at an intermediate level.

- Experience of managing contextualised and emergent staff development programmes with experience in monitoring and evaluation of design and implementation
- An established network of higher education colleagues and stakeholders.
- Participation in national higher education sector staff development work.
- Experience with policy development and implementation.
- Demonstrable conflict resolution, problem solving and mediation experience.
- Experience of stake-holder engagement at multiple levels in the university and beyond
- Participate in the development and implementation of policy guiding the mission, vision and implementation of staff development activities and programmes, offered by CHED, across a wide range of activity types and modes of delivery.
- Be actively involved in programme design and development, program delivery, operational management, and administration.
- Manage financial and budgetary matters
- Manage administrative staff in ASPD.
- Be responsive to staff development activity generated by departments in CHED, as well as the wider institution
- Contribute to strategy and policy development of ASPD offerings that have a regional and national focus.
- Manage all stakeholder relations and partnerships in consultation with the unit head;
- Develop and implement a marketing and communications strategy and plan (including a social media presence).
- Responsible for Monitoring and Evaluation of all ASPD projects as well as reporting to funders.
- Design, develop and implement needs-analyses and evaluation instruments and other reporting mechanisms as required by ASPD and Dean of CHED.
- Actively participate in higher education studies in postgrad teaching
- Document all relevant data and resources for preliminary document analysis by the unit head.
- Build cohesive teams and working with faculties across UCT.
- Identify trends and start relevant research projects.
- Advance the scholarship of Teaching and Learning (as SOTL) and higher education studies to contribute to ASPD research.
- Managing diverse and cross-disciplinary teaching teams located across the university
