The thematic focus of the conference was Accessing Success: Using evidence for change. Delegates could submit papers under the following sub-focus areas: scholarship of teaching and learning, academic staff development, innovative use of technology in teaching and learning, curriculum design, and engaging students. HELTASA 2014 was attended by 354 delegates from 38 institutions, both nationally and internationally.
The keynote presentations at the conference created capacity development opportunities, and was facilitated by international experts as well as a national specialist. These expert headed presentations were as follows: “What works for promoting student success: Lessons from the field” Prof George Kuh, Indiana University “Setting students up for success: Strategic-reader training” Profs William Grabe and Fredricka Stoller, Northern Arizona University “Well-being and agency in higher education: How are diverse students’ opportunities to function advanced” Prof Melanie Walker, University of the Free State.
For the first time, the conference included interactive sessions and digital presentation opportunities which gave delegates the chance to ask questions and interact with one another on more comfortable basis.
