The University of the Witwatersrand is a research-intensive university, with a large cohort of postgraduate students. The position of Postgraduate Education Specialist has been created to support academic staff across the university in enhancing postgraduate students’ experience. The post is located in the Centre for Learning, Teaching, and Development. Initially, the work will focus primarily on coordinating and designing learning opportunities for staff to develop their approach to supervision and explore innovative supervisory methods. Over time, the incumbent will also provide leadership in curriculum design and pedagogies for teaching postgraduate courses. The incumbent will work closely with the Postgraduate Research and Development Office, Postgraduate Affairs Office, Postgraduate Students Association, and faculties.
The key performance areas for this position are:
- Identify staff learning needs in postgraduate education
- Coordinate learning opportunities for staff involved in postgraduate education
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to enhance postgraduate education
- Keep abreast of national and international trends in postgraduate education
Requirements
A PhD (or equivalent) and substantial experience of supervising masters and doctoral students to completion. Experience of providing training in postgraduate supervision and knowledge of postgraduate curriculum design and pedagogies would be an advantage.
