Sub Theme 5: Reading the Signals: New Metrics for Scholarly Influence and SoLT
A storm is also a system of signals i.e. pressure, temperature, charge and recognised by those who know what to look for. This subtheme asks what rigorous, contextually responsive Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoLT) looks like in a tempestuous storm disrupted landscape. How do we measure impact beyond publications and throughput rates? What does it mean to be a university teacher-scholar in the emerging university, and how do institutions recognise, reward, and sustain that vital work? We seek to identify the signals of meaningful scholarly engagement that truly matter.
Provocations:
- If we should consider publication count as the primary metric of success, what new metrics for scholarly impact should we propose?
- How do we make the work of SoLT visible, valued, and rewarding within our institutional structures?
- What signals should we be reading to know if our learning and teaching practices are genuinely making a difference?
