As we move toward the 2018 HELTASA conference, “Dancing on the Learning and Teaching Waves of Change in Africa”, the conference committee is looking forward to welcoming new, current and future members of HELTASA to the waves of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Nelson Mandela University.
We are currently in the process of finalizing the preparations for the presenters and delegates who will be joining us from 20 to 23 November 2018, to set the rhythm of the teaching and learning dance in higher education. In order to enable us to proceed with the arrangements, please be advised that the registration process closed on 19 October 2018 and we unfortunately cannot accommodate additional registrations or abstract submissions. We are in the midst of finalising the programme and will share the programme with presenters and delegates as soon as the process has been completed.
The conference will be hosted on the Nelson Mandela University’s Main (South) Campus at University Way Summerstrand, which is built on a private nature reserve and fynbos conservation site. The pre-conference workshops will take place at our Education Faculty (Building 11), the plenary sessions in our lecture theatres (Building 123), while the conference presentations will take place in the University Lecture Halls (Building 35).
In order to assist visitors to navigate around campus, please refer to the Nelson Mandela University MapBuddy, a web-based application, which uses your device’s location settings to determine where you are and allows you to select your destination. Simply select the campus, followed by the building and ask for directions – an arrow will then indicate the easiest way to your destination.
During this year’s conference we have also invited the HELTASA Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to engage with their members during the conference through various platforms, over and above, the customary SIG meetings, to enable delegates to “meet their Sigs”, so to speak. In response to this invitation for greater engagement, the Foundation SIG has invited Prof Ian Scott to host a pre-conference workshop on, “Who should be on the extended curriculum programme? Towards a framework for institutional placement policy”, as part of their engagement with current Foundation Sig members, and the greater HELTASA community.

- Co-constructing student academic literacy skills in everyday teaching practice by Sonya Stephenson
Information regarding the pre-conference workshops will be posted on the conference website and communicated to delegates that have registered to attend the workshops in due course. We request that delegates please indicate their first and second preference when registering, as spaces are limited for the workshops.
