The National Benchmark Tests Project (NBTP) is an initiative of Universities South Africa (USAf) that started in 2008. The Centre for Higher Education and Development (CHED) at UCT is the implementing partner facilitating the national testing of students enrolling in Higher Education for the first time.
While the NBT’s are an important diagnostic tool to see where students can be placed and supported, how are they being utilised by departments and faculties across HE landscape? Do they assist in identifying gaps to be bridged through student support or are they used as a further gate-keeping mechanism to exclude students? These are some of the critical debates we need to engage in around the NBT’s.
